An enologist is a professional who must have a degree in Viticulture and Oenology, usually a three-year certification. These are obtained from universities and educational institutions that specialize in preparing enologists to practice either as a freelancer or as an employee of a winery. The enologist must also be trained in hygienic regulation of machinery, bottling processes and frequently samples wine in order to analyze it. All of this with the intent of understanding how to market it for sales.
From vineyard management to wine legislation, this professional is preceded by a rigorous training in countries such as Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland and is being recognized in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Slovenia and Uruguay as well. In addition to academic preparation, an enologist must explore the ever-changing elements of the core nature of wine. This is profession which demands passion and curiosity.
